Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Vaccination

Should I get vaccinated?

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a very contagious virus that causes respiratory infections that affect people’s breathing.

Anyone can get RSV, but it’s particularly dangerous for young children and older adults. In some cases it can lead to lower respiratory tract disease (LRTD), which can be very serious.

How do I get vaccinated?

The maternal RSV vaccine (Abrysvo ®) is free under the National Immunisation Program (NIP). It’s recommended if you are 28–36 weeks pregnant.

The infant vaccine is free for babies and children under 2.

At Craven’s Pharmacy, we also offer the RSV vaccine for those over 60 years old.

Because it’s a seasonal disease, the virus – and hence the vaccine – do change over time. So, if you haven’t had a jab for a couple of years, come in and chat to us. Just like with the flu, it might be time for a booster.

We can also help you with other vaccinations, health advice and health checks.

RSV symptoms & facts

Like the flu, RSV is a seasonal disease that’s most common during the autumn and winter. In tropical regions, such as northern parts of Australia, RSV can be present all through the year.

The virus is transmitted in airborne droplets, which can be spread when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It can survive on hard surfaces such as phones, computers, toys and surfaces for several hours.

Preventing disease

Getting vaccinated and practicing good hygiene are the best ways to stay healthy.

  • Wash your hands with soap and water regularly.
  • Regularly clean all hard surfaces, such as computer keyboards, mobile devices, door handles etc.
  • Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze and wash your hands afterwards.

In addition, eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables of all different colours. This will make sure you get enough vitamins and minerals to keep your immune system strong.

You can get face masks, hand sanitiser, vitamin and mineral supplements and other supplies in the pharmacy.
