Testing at home
If you’re testing at home as part of your diabetes management, that’s great! Home monitors, such as finger-prick devices or continuous glucose monitors, are really useful for tracking your blood sugar levels each day. By testing regularly, you can start to understand how food, activity, stress, medications, or insulin affect your body.
But self-tests do have limitations.
In the pharmacy, we can test for hemoglobin A1C, which shows your average blood sugar over the past 2–3 months. This can help identify type 2 diabetes or prediabetes. We can also make sure that your home test is accurate, and recommend other health tests, follow-ups and wellbeing advice that can help you to stay healthy.
Why check blood sugar?
Getting your blood glucose checked now and then is important – even if you feel healthy – because some conditions don’t have symptoms in the early stages.
This simple test can help identify if you have diabetes or prediabetes. About 5% of the Australian population has diabetes and about 16% of adults have prediabetes.
If you detect these early, you can better manage your condition and avoid complications. In fact, prediabetes can be reversed with early lifestyle changes!
But left unattended, high blood sugar can cause serious problems over time. These include, heart disease, kidney failure and damage to your eyes and vision.
