How do I get vaccinated?

Pneumococcal disease vaccinations are free for children and also free for eligible adults. This includes older adults, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 50 years or above, and other adults who have a serious medical condition and are at risk.

Two different vaccines are available and side effects are usually limited. They might include some soreness, redness or swelling at the injection site, or a low fever.

As with any vaccine or medication, if you have allergies, have had a serious reaction in the past, or have other health concerns, let us know and we can advise you on what is best for you.

We can also help you with other vaccinations, health advice and health checks.

Pneumococcal disease symptoms & facts

Pneumococcal disease is caused by the bacteria Streptococcus pneumoniae.

It can lead to different illnesses, such as:

  • pneumonia (lung infection)
  • meningitis (brain lining infection)
  • blood infections
  • bone infections.

The disease is spread through airborne particles, which means it can be easily transmitted by someone coughing or sneezing.

Preventing disease

Getting vaccinated and practicing good hygiene are the best ways to stay healthy.

  • Wash your hands with soap and water regularly.
  • Regularly clean all hard surfaces, such as computer keyboards, mobile devices, door handles etc.
  • Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze and wash your hands afterwards.

In addition, eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables of all different colours. This will make sure you get enough vitamins and minerals to keep your immune system strong.

You can get face masks, hand sanitiser, vitamin and mineral supplements and other supplies in the pharmacy.
