Should I get vaccinated?

We all know about COVID. It’s a highly contagious respiratory illness, meaning that it is easy to catch. It can cause mild illness, like an unpleasant cold, or serious pneumonia, which can be fatal. Because the virus keeps changing, it’s important to get regular COVID boosters to protect yourself.

Although it’s no longer in the news, people are still getting COVID all the time. And all over the world, including across Australia.

So don’t let it spoil your plans.

How do I get vaccinated?

The COVID vaccine is a quick and simple jab.

Adults over 18 years old are eligible for a free booster every 12 months. Older adults and people at risk of more serious effects, such as those with existing respiratory problems or compromised immune systems, are advised to get a booster once a year or once every 6 months if you are over 75 years old.

We can also help you with other vaccinations and health advice.

Vaccine side effects

Severe side effects to the COVID immunisation are rare. However, tell your pharmacist if you have any allergies or medical concerns before getting the vaccine.

For most people, the COVID vaccine might cause minor side effects for a couple of days, such as a slight headache, but these quickly go away. If you would like to discuss side effects or any other aspects about vaccines or your health, come and chat to our knowledgeable staff. Your pharmacist can advise you on whether the COVID shot is right for you.

If you feel very unwell, faint, short of breath or if your symptoms do not go away, you should contact your doctor.

Preventing disease

COVID is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which continues to change and adapt. This means that getting vaccinated – and getting boosters – and practicing good hygiene are the best ways to avoid getting COVID.

  • Wash your hands with soap and water regularly.
  • Regularly clean all hard surfaces, such as computer keyboards, mobile devices, door handles etc.
  • Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze and wash your hands afterwards.

In addition, eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables of all different colours. This will make sure you get enough vitamins and minerals to keep your immune system strong.

You can get face masks, hand sanitiser, vitamin and mineral supplements and other supplies in the pharmacy.
